making a sauna / steam room on the cheap?

i want to build a sauna without spending a small fortune. The basic components in my opinion are: an airtight room with good insulation, drain/air vent, and some sort of steam generator.

my current ideas are either…
- a pot on a fire with a steam pipe to the room
- a portable hot plate n a bowl of boiling water
- heck id even settle for a misting system with hot water.

Any ideas, suggestions, or tips?
and im not talking super cheap. but reasonable

  • Just guessing:

Kettle, rain coat and a hose. You probably can’t get much cheaper than that.

humidifier or a clothes steamer, one of those as seen on tv steamers.

maybe in your case x 3 or 4

You’re on the right lines. Two tips:
    1) Get down to your local library and look at books on sauna construction – that way you can get top advice for free.
    2) Get friends to chip in for the costs and work, in return for being able to use it once it’s complete.

You can buy sauna kits that are say 6 x 8 in size. All you have to do is assemble them. If you go onto Amazon.com and read some user reviews, you can pick them up for around $900. Not a bad price and would be a heck of a lot easier than cutting everything yourself.

I think you can buy pretty good prefabricated sauna unit for about $2500. Thou I am not sure what is your definition of “a small fortune”
